U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., 65, a Democratic lawmaker from Newark, NJ, died today, according to published reports, of complications caused earlier this month by a heart attack.
The 10th Congressional District lawmaker won his first of six elections following the death of his father, U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Sr., who died in 2012 of colon cancer.
The younger Payne championed several public works-related efforts. He became chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure鈥檚 Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials. The subcommittee oversees national infrastructure and all modes of transportation, including aviation and mass transit.
In 2017, Payne secured a nearly billion-dollar appropriation to a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar effort to rebuild transportation infrastructure between New Jersey and New York.
He also introduced two bills that became law. The Department of Homeland Security Interoperable Communications Act of 2015 strives to give DHS personnel the ability to reliably communicate during emergencies. Another measure secures public areas of transportation facilities.
